The focal points the week ahead are going to be TUESDAYS JPOW reappointment trial (I mean testimony, did I say trial??), Wednesdays CPI and Fridays ReSale Tales.
We all KNOW they are to be watched and I can recall — in more ‘normal’ of times — that feeling where if you had given me the data point ahead of time, I’d still have mucked up the trade.
That said, what follows are some useful (to me) calendars of events (in addition TO 2022 global MARKET holidays — Coming of Age SUNDAY, 10th).
First up is calendar I used to cut / paste into my daily 2pg PDF, back in the day …
HERE are some key data points on (MSs ) calendar
Regarding CPI and ReSale TALES — their views,
Consumer Price Index (Wednesday, 8:30am): We forecast core CPI inflation in December increased 0.49%M compared to 0.53% in November. This would raise the year-over-year from 4.9% to 5.4%. Food prices should be increase 0.36%M vs. 0.71% in November, while energy prices are forecasted at -0.4% vs. 3.5% prior. Together, this would lift headline CPI inflation 0.40%M in December vs. 0.78% in November, and raise the year-over-year from 6.8% to 7.1%.
Retail Sales (Friday, 8:30am): Our retail sales tracker points to a 0.8% increase in December core retail sales following a 0.1% gain in November. We expect the Bloomberg definition of the "control" group, which further excludes food services, to increase 0.9%M (vs. -0.1%M in November), with food services spending expected to increase very slightly after a 1.0% gain prior. We expect auto sales declined 1.3%M in December (vs. +0.0%M in November) on the back of weaker reported unit auto sales. Usage and price data point to an decrease in sales at gasoline stations of 0.3%M vs. +1.7% in November. Incorporating these forecasts on top of our expectation for core retail sales points to a 0.4%M increase in headline retail sales in December (vs. +0.3% in November and +1.8% in October). Excluding autos, we look for retail sales to have risen by 0.8%M (vs. +0.3% prior).
